Editing and Publishing


Editing:

  • Editing is important because it helps to ensure that a document is free of grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors. Editing also allows for the improvement of clarity and flow. This is done by rearranging sentences and paragraphs and adding or removing information where necessary.
  • The impact of editing maximizes the accuracy and impact of written documents to enhance the publication and fund-raising efforts. The degree of editing plays a large role in developing reader comfort. So the manuscript should be clear and concise.
  • You must exhibit strong skills in the following areas to become an excellent editor: writing, storytelling, proofreading, research, grammar and vocabulary. Beyond that, you must also be detail-oriented, creative, a good communicator
  • Types of Editing
  • Developmental Editing. (Also called: conceptual editing or manuscript appraisal.) 
  • Evaluation Editing. (Also called: manuscript critique or structural edit.) 
  • Content Editing. (Also called: substantive editing or full editing.) 
  • Line Editing.
  • Copyediting.
  • Proofreading.
  •  Problems Of Editing

Three of the most common problems that authors feel editors introduce to their works are edits that (1) are unneeded and excessive, (2) change the meaning, or (3) take an unreasonable amount of time to review.

Publishing:

  • The concept of publishing means making information available to the public. In the past, this was done mainly through issuing printed copies of documents.
  • The importance of publishing is that it provides a communication channel for researchers within a field, a repository of important research efforts, and a recognition mechanism for researchers and institutions alike.
  • An example of publishing is traditional publishing. The term refers to the creation and distribution of printed works, such as books, newspapers, and magazines. With the advent of digital information systems, the scope has expanded to include digital publishing such as eBooks,  digital magazines, websites, social media, music, and video game publishing.
